  • The average person doesn't.

The klismopheliac desire to do it several times a day and follow their desires whenever possible. It is case because you said perform that takes into account both those who give and those who receive.

A person with bowel problems may need to do it anywhere for daily to several times per week.

Those who do it for alternative health reasons do it whenever it seems right.

  • Never except in cases of severe, long term constipation. Occasionally a doctor may have to perform one prior to a medical procedure as well. Also, in some countries doctors give women an enema before childbirth so that they don't move their bowels during labor. There's no compelling reason to ever give yourself one and there is not one piece of evidence that they convey medical benefits whereas there is evidence that regular enemas pose many severe medical risks.
  • never. it is very hard on your system & can weaken muscles so u can't go w/out them. i have worked in group homes. institutions used 2 use them 4 convenience & i've worked w/people who can't go w/out them now. eat plenty of fiber from fruit, vegetables & whole grain. in a pinch drink a salt solution. 4 cups of water w/1 or 2 table spoons of sea salt. it is a much gentler way 2 cleanse your colon. stay near a toilet 4 an hour or so 2 avoid embarrassing accidents.
  • if you're eating properly and having daily bowel movements then you don't need an enema.

  • As a last resort only, for constipation. They are totally unnatural and not without risks. There is no other health benefit.

  • Well, because of my IBS I take an enema every day, (as recommended by my doctor), and I have been doing this for over 40yrs with no side affects.
  • Never, unless you have some compelling reason to.
