Will the people who get H1N1 have a high chance of being killed from it?

Resolved Question

Will the people who get H1N1 have a high chance of being killed from it?

Okay I'm 12, and I FREAKED OUT about swine flu last year. Then I just talked to my parents and all of my friends, and they said it wouldn't be that bad, and the only people who'd probably die was babys and older people. But everyone still talks about how bad it is...Still bothers me and I'm fed up. I went to my friends house just yesterday and as a joke I said "Yahh I already had swine flu..." and she goes "Then why the heck aren't you dead?" and I said that it mostly only kills people who are babys and older people. Then right back she said, it's gonna be the #1 killer on 2010. FREAKING OUT!!! Help me.

A) one of the things that puzzles scientists, is that with the "regular" flu, babies and old people are the ones who are at the highest risk. That is not the case with this variety....

Since I'm sure there are folks who will say other wise, you can google "CDC swine flu" and check for yourself.

B) the "swine flu" is no more "deadly" than any other flu bug that goes around each year. Don't get me wrong, any flu can kill people - but its not very likely. Most people simply feel like poo for a few days and go right back to living regularly.

There is a lot of media hype surrounding this flu, truth is, if the media didn't have a vested interested in promoting fear, it wouldn't be very noteworthy, except to scientists who study these things.

Just be sure to wash your hands often, never touch your face, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and keep a regular sleep schedule. Thats the best preventative for the flu...

Be well

  • I would say for a normal person ! there is no chance he would be dead by H1N1 .
this kind of flu is not more serious than a normal flu ! only immunodeficient people could have a serious infection by it !
so no need to worry at all !

  • We are all doomed
  • Flu strains usually kill babies and senior citizens more than other demographics. Babies have a less developed immune system and seniors usually a weakened one. They also are less tolerant of severe dehydration and electrolyte loss.

The H1N1 is related to an outbreak earlier in the 1900's, the Spanish Flu... which ravaged across the world. Many senior citizens still have antibodies from this outbreak, while the rest of us don't have any. So, this strain of flu will not be as bad for seniors as it will be for the rest of us.

If you happen to catch the flu, stay hydrated. Take small sips of water, pedialyte, or gatoraid watered down to half strength. If you can't keep that down or if you continue to have severe diarrhea... then your parents will take you to the ER where they will re-hydrate and keep you hydrated thru this stage.

The best way to avoid catching the flu is to wash your hands before touching your face/mouth/eyes.

If everyone did that and also sneezed/coughed into their upper arm (or into a tissue and then throw the tissue away and wash your hands)... then the flu would be a non-issue.
