Ginko Biloba + St. Johns Wart?

Resolved Question

Ginko Biloba + St. Johns Wart?

I am already taking St Johns Wart for irritability. I would like to start taking Ginko Biloba for mental clarity but I understand that Ginko should NOT be taken with anti-depressants. Would St. Johns Wart be considered an anti-depressant?

If you are looking for mental clarity, don't go with Gingko Biloba, it won't do much of anything. Instead, get yourself some FolGard (it contains Folic Acid, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin B12) and is designed for improving mental clarity. By the way, for strong irratibility, 5htp is better in the long run than St John's Wart, and it has less side effects. And to answer your question you should not take St John's Wart and Gingko Biloba at the same time, they should be taken 3 hours apart.

  • Yes, they share the same principal mechanism of action, though St. John's wort behaves quite unreliably, and bothers liver enzymes significantly.

In other words, don't mix them.
