Will melatonin help me sleep??

I have a lot of trouble sleeping and my mom won't get me sleeping pills...no matter what i do, no matter how early i wake up the next morning, i don't get to sleep untill like 5am. Will melatonin help, we have it in our house...and i know it's like a natural substance or something...so will it help me fall asleep and how many should i take if it does.
oh and im 15 if that helps

melatonin helped me! and i have like the same situation cept i can get sleeping pills i just prefer melatonin :P

  • I wouldn't recommend it if you are 15 unless your doctor specifically says to. Melatonin is a hormone that controls both the sleeping and waking cycles. That's the very reason it should not be given to a child under 16 unless they are tested to be deficient... whenever you add hormones to a body that already has their hormones in flux, you're just asking for trouble. There should also be a specific warning on the bottle saying as much as well.

    That being said, some of the most popular supplements for sleep that are Chamomile, Hops, L-Tryptophan, and L-Theanine. You can try any one of those to help you sleep naturally.

    Also, make sure you avoid sugar, caffeine, and exercise for at least 2-3 hours before you want to head to bed to eliminate other common possibilities of sleeping problems. If none of those help, it's possible you may need to see a Sleep Specialist to see why you aren't sleeping right, but most people don't get to that point after trying some of these options.
