Once your an alcoholic is there any turning back?

Resolved Question

Once your an alcoholic is there any turning back?

I will admit it I am an alcoholic and I drink 5 to 6 days a week. I knew this was going to happen because at the beginning of the summer I decided to break my habit of 2 days a week. I am only 22 and I am addicted to alcohol. I am tired of this trend and currently I am looking for a cure even though I am drunk right now. I cannot afford rehab so some tips for going cold turkey would be very helpful. Even if I can slow down would be great to be able to go back to 2 days a week and not crave drinking beer. So I am embarrassed to ask but can you help me without telling me to go to aa?

Additional Details

Lol thanks Ruth but I already smoke pot but not very much because it is illegal.

I think that deep down I am doomed that's why I asked this question. ??
Minx I have been eating tomatoes and sweet corn for the last 2 weeks since I started harvesting it. I really don't think a bunch of fruits and vegetables can help my best bet is cold turkey since I am young. I don't know I'll try to stop but it won't be easy.

Betchya i can .......... yes there's any turning back...... but no you can't be addicted to alcohol and think that you can just have a couple of nights a week drinking ...... that in essence would not be an addiction....... being able to drink just 2 nights a week implies that you have control over the amount you drink..... alcoholics don't have any control over when and how much they drink mate .... i know ... i been there done that ..... you're lucky ..... you're only 22 and you've acknowledged you have a problem with drinking.... that's the first step ...... admitting it out loud and asking for help..... geez... i was 38 before i did anything about it ........ but yeah.... bet your boots it can be done...... and i did it without AA .... you've just got to take it one day at a time and feed your body properly.

EDIT**

and stop drinking completely **

**

Hang in there luv ........ you CaN do this because you are entitled to the health and vitality and peace and sanity ridding yourself of the addiction will bring........you are extraordinarly strong, courageous and brave ...... i also know that you can and will do this.

Some people would still say i'm recovering but i say i'm recovered !! I was a wild and woolly alcoholic and at the tender age of 38 i looked like i had some ghastly galloping disease from the way i had ravaged my body with alcohol ...... not these days ....... i was drinking an awful lot mate....... about 6 litres of wine a day before i ditched it......... you need to be kinder to yourself buddy and just take it one day at a time..... for now, all you have to get through is each single day at a time...... baby steps buddy.

When you quit drinking, it's essential that you feed your body a cleansing, healthy diet that supplies the nutrients it needs to recover from the affects of alcohol abuse..... at heart, alcoholism is a sugar dependancy... so be carefull not to aid that dependency by giving the body the refined sugar it's going to crave.... and don't swap one addiction for another ... Research has shown that high carbohydrate diets loaded with junky foods tend to increase the desire for alcohol, while good nutritious whole food diets will create less desire for alcohol.. when you have a craving for alcohol try some of the following

~ Dates, will satisfy your body's craving for something sweet;
~ Bananas, unsweetned fresh coconut, andRomaine lettuce are said to deter alcohol cravings too;
~ Celery helps balance the body's pH balance and is thought to lessen the desire for alcohol;
~ Tomato juice with lemon squeezed into it is a popular folk remedy to ease the urge to drink too;
~ Carrot juice diluted by half with water will taste sweet enough to satisfy the body's sugar cravings and is cleansing to the liver;
~ Boysenberry juice is another juice that tastes sweet and also decreased the desire for alcohol;
~ Fresh Cabbage juice..... cabbage contains small amounts of glutamine, which helps curb the brains craving for alcohol.... it's aso helpful for alcoholics who have suffered liver and stomach distress...... actually, the glutamine plays a very important role in curbing the brain chatter & the inordinate desire to drink ....... ;0)

fresh celery juice saved my sorrybutt ....... juice up a whole celery (minus the end and leaves of course) with one freshly peeled lemon and drink that daily ....... i still drink it sometimes twice a day ...... or swap the lemon for an apple if you want the sweetness ...... celery is brilliant at bolstering liver function, as are lemons ........ and celery is rich in calcium and magnesium so vital for healthy neural functioning, and for bone tooth and heart health and healthy digestion ..... drink that each day and get the benefits of the calcium and magnesium being absorbed straight into your bloodstream and bypassing digestion.

Also, foods rich in Tryptophan will help relieve some symptoms of alcohol-related body-chemistry disorders and aid in control of alcoholism, induce natural sleep; reduce pain sensitivity; act as a nondrug antidepressant; alleviate migraines and aid in reducing anxiety and tension .

Best natural food sources of Tryptophan are; cottage cheese,lean meat, fish, turkey, bananas, organic dried dates, organic peanuts and all protein rich foods.

It's also important to keep the body's blood sugar level stable when trying to ditch an alcohol addiction.... eat small, frequent meals... avoid sugar, sweets, caffeine and refined carbs such as those in breads and pasta... eat plenty of vegies .... particularly leafy and green vegies, which are chock full of magnesium ... magnesium is essential for healthy nerve and muscle functioning and for heart health and will help you deal with the stress of everyday living.... magnesium is known as the antistress mineral and will help resolve headaches and migraines, constipation, acid tummy, twitching and nerve cramping problems and lower back pains too .... also eat plenty whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal and millet and buckwheat.. drink loads of fresh filtered water too to help cleanse the body and diminish cravings.... to help detoxify the liver, add freshly squeezed lemon juice to your water.

herbs that may be helpfull to help recuperate are ~

Cinnamon, which is naturally sweet and thus satisfies the body's desire for sugary stuff... it also has a calming effect on the nerves;
Ginseng which nourishes the adrenal glands;
Gotu kola to help detoxify the body and also has a revitalising effect on the nerves;
Milk thistle seed capsules to help prevent and repair alcoholic induced liver disease........... ;0)

Take a multi B complex supplement also.... to support healthy immune, neural and digestive functioning...... great for bolstering your body to deal with life's every day stressy situation .... Get one including all the B's ie ~ B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 andB12 and folic acid etc. as they all work best as a group. Don't buy any of the B complex of vitamins individually but rather as a whole group, unless specifically told to do so buy a nutritionally oriented physician or naturopath.

remember that all vitamins are not the same.... seriously, some of them are just plain bed pan bullets...... ask the advice of the resident naturopath in your local health food store as to which vitamin B complex is the easiest for your body to assimilate ..... pharmaceutical grade is the best quality .... and a liquid complex would be the easiest for your body to assimilate .. instore naturopaths love sharing their knowledge and don't usually charge for off the cuff advice.

Ensure that you stay properly hydrated too..... drink at least 2 - 3 litres of fresh filtered water on a daily basis to help detox your body and to help it operate at peak functioning levels..... you'd be amazed at how being just a little dehydrated can affect your mood and energy levels.

Try to cut right back also on coffee, tea, sodas and soft drinks as they will all rob you of your precious B complex of vitamins and dehydrate you terribly.

Most of all try to be nice to you and do the things that make you happy & put a smile on your dial ...... that could be putting on really loud rock music and leaping wildly around your living room jammin on down on your imaginary electric guitar up on stage with all the boys in the band... hey, it works for me ....... pumps up the level of serotonin naturally in your brain and makes you feel fine....... my point here is that you need to enjoy your life ...... i've been where you are right now..... i ditched alcohol 7 years ago and it's the best ball & chain i ever got rid of ....... all you need to do is beat this addiction one day at a time...... baby steps will move mountains mate ...... visualise yourself addiction free ..... repeatedly and sooner rather than later you will be.

good health to you mate.

peace baby

  • Yes, but it's very unlikely. Either you're asking this question because you're trying to get support to continue fighting the cravings, or you know deep down you're doomed. Trust me when I say that only you know what will eventually happen. You've known it all along!
  • Having not read anyone's other answers, here goes...
    How about checking into support groups at a local church?
    I don't mean they should try to "convert" you or anything. I've found these kinds of support groups are very intuitive, and caring. If your employer or school offers any sort of employee assistance, or counseling, check it out!
    You are too young to be so self-defeating!
    My thoughts and supportive prayers are with you!
  • No, you can handle it. The first thing is to repair the body. Alcohol creates a lot o nuritional deficiencies.

  • I drink too much.

    I can go days without drinking but when I start I can't stop and end up on like 12 hour binges.

    Not sure what to do either - GP wasn't much help.
  • Yes it is possible to give up alcohol.

    Sometimes it takes killing someone in a drunk driving collision, and then going to prison for many years to cure you. Do you really want to wait that long to give up alcohol?

    I suggest that you just give it up cold, and stop drinking. Try this for 1 year, then start to drink socially only - that is less than 3 drinks a week. That is what I do. It is actually really funny to go to a Karaoke bar and watch your drunk friends drinking and try to sing.

    Once you step back, and look at the drunk friends, and think of the hundreds of dollars that you spent the last year drinking, you begin to think how much is costs you. I owned a house when I was 21, so I really could not afford to go out to the bar scene when I was 22. By the time I was 40, I owned a 400,000 house, sold it and retired for 2 years! Good timing, as that same place is only worth $250,000 today!

    Good Luck!
  • I think Ruth's advice is pretty concrete and knowledgeable. AA is the most effective method of dealing with alcoholism, but does require complete abstinence. If you are addicted then there's no going back to two a week, you just have to quit. AA helps make that a lot easier. So now it depends entirely on you. I'd advice you to at least consult one of the senior members from AA for advice. You don't have to join AA you can just seek advice from a member. They'd be able to answer any queries that you may have, such as some that I currently have. Are you really addicted? How old are you, and how long have you been drinking? and for how long has it been almost daily? Maybe you're not really addicted but just habituated, or psychologically dependent. If that is the case you may not need to quit for good but temporarily, and I'd advice you not to be the judge of what temporary is and how long that should be. Leave it to the judgment of an expert.

  • what's wrong with AA? there's nothing to be ashamed of. people make mistakes. it's a part of life. if AA is a system that has helped other people than you should be interested if you really want to get clean, or at least regulated. i have some friends i know that are on their way, or already are alcoholics and i'm 21, so you're not alone, and i certainly don't think negatively of these people- i just hope for their benefit that they are able to overcome the problem.

    other than AA, i have one suggestion. if you want something to replace your habit of drinking, to kind of ween you off the stuff, i suggest marijuana. it will give you an escape, but isn't physically addicting, and is relatively harmless, even more so if you invest in a vaporizer which takes the THC straight from the source and leaves the excess tars that can pollute your lungs behind. it's basically a worry free substance when used responsibly.

    i hope you learn to overcome your embarrassment, because there really is nothing to be ashamed of. LITERALLY everyone gets themselves into bad situations at some point in their life. you're far from alone.

    if you want to read about success stories, then i'm sure you can look up some on google. they might give you some motivation and give you some hints on how to overcome the problem. good luck <3
