What is the point of starched sheets?

What is the point of starched sheets?

do you think that would help a weak back?

Starching sheets is for fundamentally only one reason, appearance, the starch makes the creases in the sheets more prominent. So your sheets are stiffer and hold their shape longer.

The days of laundering sheets in this way passed many years ago with the advent of permanent press sheets and fabrics, most sheets do not even need ironing now with polyester and blended cotton fabrics like nylons.

Starching a polyester or nylon sheet is best done professionally because heat can make the sheet bind and binding the individual man made fiber can damage the sheets. Starch was created from plant stearols and is found commonly in potatoes which was partially used for the starches also flax was another common source.

Because cotton fibers wrinkle easily the starch straightens the fibers and stiffens them, shirts and pants are sprayed with the starches in a mixture so it soaks into the fabric then heat is applied and the ironing of the seams and pleated areas are pressed and the sheet, shirt or pants has a definite starched appearance.

Starching is a good way to learn how things were done many years ago and ironing is too. Have fun but I prefer wash and wear.

DISLAIMER: Starch does not in any way make a cloth, fabric, sheet, shirt, pant or blouse firm enough to make your back stop hurting nor does it stiffen any cloth enough to cause a noticable difference to that effect.

  • Starched Sheets? Sounds scratchy. Get the total gym to strenghten you back. Chuck will whip you into shape.
  • Starched sheets = no wrinkles = prettier!
I don't know about it being practical though.
  • no one starches sheets anymore, so there is no point.
