Health Insurance.................?

I have noticed that a lot of people do not have health insurance. Is it very expensive to get insured there? How do families cope?
What types of health insurance are available and what type of coverage do they have? How much are premiums ( on the average) for different types of insurance? For an individual and families? Who are the biggest providers?
Any such info would be very useful.
