I completely understand: staying bareback on a horse is beyond intense (and excruciating) on the quads.

# 1) STRETCH!!! Obviously, stretch your upper thighs (while standing, pull your heel to your butt) but don't forget to do your hamstrings as well. (Legs straight out on the floor, pull bellybutton towards knees.)

Heavy work on one muscle group (thighs) can weaken its reciprocal partner (the hamstring.) Keep them both flexible and strong. Your pain will subside and you will also be helping to avoid future injuries like muscle tears.

For arms, the same thing. Make sure those wrists and upper-arms are getting a good stretch before AND AFTER your ride.

# 2) Ibuprophen can reduce swelling in muscles. Try taking something like Advil 20 mins before riding. It might lesson your symptoms.

# 3) For VERY inflamed muscles, put an ice-pack on straight after excercize. (But keep in mind that these kinds of injuries need rest more than anything.)

# 4) That said, for general muscle ache after a vigorous workout, use HEAT to loosen muscles back to health. (Great on backs.)

# 5) In addition, a hot bath with Epsom Salt (very available - check CVS, Walgreens etc) works like magic. Relax. Your body will bounce back in no time.

Good luck! Have fun out there.

  • hay mel try a hot shower and some icee hot on your arms and the out side of your thighs and around your knees then go to bed cover up all the parts that hurt and don't forget to take some asperin
  • Maybe your being to hard on yourself and cut back on the horse riding.
As for aches take a hot bath, that usually eases pains.
  • take a hot bath, take some motrin and try and go to sleep that should help
