Is taking essential Magnesium good for you?

Resolved Question

Is taking essential Magnesium good for you?

I take 250 mg of magnesium everyday. It says that it is good for bone and muscle health.

I am 39 nine years old and just want to look out for the future. I know as we age our bones and muscles can start deteriorate. I do take a calcium plus D @ bed time..

haha ..... woowoo practitioners hey ....... never heard that one before ...... if i were you i wouldn't be supplementing with the magnesium or the calcuim or the vitamin D ..... and i'm 45 .... my reasons are that calcium requires magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin D for effective assimilation ..... calcium and magnesium work in tandem in the human body for healthy bones teeth and heart functioning and of course for healthy nerve and muscle functioning ... they work in a 2:1 relationship.... 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium ....... more of one or the other will simply throw out the balance and cause side affects as the body tries to readjust .... ie ~ too much magnesium will generally produce diahhorea..... too much calcium produces constipation........ eat more green vegies ....... celery, kale, chard, buk choy, broccolli (if you can tolerate cruciferous vegies) ..... all spectacularly rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamin C in perfect harmony as nature intended and far easier to assimilate than any pill or supplement that you never really know what added fillers, flavorings, preservatives they contain anyway....... and cheaper too ........ fresh salmon, sardines and tuna are rich in calcium magnesium vitamin D too......... add that to your green vegies and your cooking with gas luv.

oh, a diet high in sodas, pop, soft drinks, alcohol, caffeine, animal protein, saturated fat, processed sugar, processed salt will all do a great job of ripping the precious minerals calcium and magnesium right out of your bones....... they all raise uric acid levels in the blood stream.... acidify your system........ thus prompting your body to leach minerals from your bones in an effort to neutralise it..... icky... calcium and magnesium deficiency isn't pretty.

go eat the green and salad vegies i say.

peace baby

  • There is no scientific evidence that supplementary minerals provide any benefit. The minerals you get from your food is the only nutrient that your body uses efficiently. Supplemental minerals are treated as waste in your system, and in some cases they can be hazardous to your health. There are exceptions, but should only be used under supervision of an MD, not the woo woo practitioners btw.
  • The body needs magnesium. There is plenty of scientific evidence that food is good for you and in tha food should be magnesium.

When you take any supplement you need to take a wholefood or natural vitaimn, not something made in a laboratory.

  • Calcium and magnesium also helps to maintain a strong heartbeat. Food does not give you enough. Take the supplements and don't worry. I have taken 750 mg magnesium for 25 years and my blood-work is fine.
